Abstract

547,456. Metals and alloys. UDY, M. J. Jan. 29, 1940, No. 1776. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1939. [Class 82 (i)] Exothermic reaction mixtures for the production of metals or alloys such as steel alloys, or for altering the composition of molten metal baths as by incorporating metals such as iron, chromium, or nickel therein, are in the form of solid agglomerates, which may be briquetted, comprising reducing agent, oxidizing material, and one or more metals or reducible metal compounds, the reducing agent being in intimate contact with and bonded together by means of the oxidizing material which may be solidified from the molten state. The reducing agent may be silicon or carbon. The oxidizing agents may be alkali nitrates, chlorates, or chromates, alkaline earth chromates, or manganese dioxide. In in example the mixture comprises oxidized ferrochromium, ferrochrome-silicon, and sodium. nitrate or chromate, the mixture being fused at the melting point of the nitrate &c. The product is reacted on a bath of molten steel for the production of ferrochromium or a chromium steel. Additional lime may be added. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 546,682. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
