546,682. Alloys. UDY, M. J. Jan. 29, 1940, No. 3680/42. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1939. Divided out of 547,456. [Class 82 (i)] Alloys containing chromium are made by the use of an exothermic reaction mixture comprising high carbon ferrochrome and an oxidizing material in such proportions as to generate sufficient heat to melt the iron and chromium present. The oxidizing agent may be alkali metal nitrate, chlorate, or chromate, or oxidized ferrochrome, which may be made by the process described in Specification 520,331, and the mixture may include a reducing agent which may be silicon or a silicon alloy, and one or more metals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, or manganese, or oxygen compounds thereof. All the materials are preferably finely divided, and the mixture may be briquetted or agglomerated, as by heating it to above the melting point of one or more of the constituents. The mixture may be ignited to produce a ferrochromium of lower carbon content, or it may be brought into reaction on a bath of molten iron.
