[Class 82 (i)] A reaction mixture for use in the production of chromium alloys comprises a finely divided chromate, a non-carbonaceous reducing agent, and either a chromium compound in a lower state of oxidation than a chromate and formed by heating a chromate to liberate oxygen, or a non-reactive diluent material, or both. The chromium compound may be a chromite, e.g. calcium chromite, and this may be made by heating a chromate or bichromate or a mixture of chromate and bichromate. The diluent material may be lime or a metal or alloy such as ferrochromium, ferrovanadium, ferrotungsten, ferromanganese, ferromolybdenum, nickel, or copper. Additional oxidizing agents such as sodium nitrate, sodium chlorate, or manganese dioxide may also be present. A chromate product made by the process described in Specifications 540,364, [Groug III], may be used.
