563,145. Metals and alloys. UDY, M. J. Jan. 27, 1943, No. 1415. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1942. [Class 82 (i)] A reaction mixture for use in preparing alloys or an alloying metal consists of a mixture of a finely-divided oxide of chromium; manganese, vanadium, tungsten, titanium, or molybdenum and finely divided calcium oxide, which mixture has been heated sufficiently to effect chemical combination between the oxides, and is then mixed in finely divided form with finely divided non-carbonaceous reducing material, e.g. silicon or aluminium. Before being mixed with the reducing material, the product of the chemical combination may be subjected to the action of an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature sufficiently high to effect conversion of at least a portion of the metal oxide to a higher state of oxidation. The reaction mixture may also contain silica for slag-forming purposes, and a small amount of sodium carbonate for promoting oxidation. For incorporating alloy metals in molten iron or steel or other metal baths, the reaction mixture is such as will react exothermically to produce the alloy metal. Silicon, as a reducing agent, is preferably employed as an alloy of silicon and the metal of the metal oxide of the reaction mixture. Aluminium may be employed as such or as an aluminium-silicon alloy.
