Abstract
Alloys of titanium, tungsten, chromium, &c. are made by the exothermic reduction of their oxides by a melted mass containing iron, carbon, aluminium, silicon, calcium, magnesium, or their compounds, or mixtures of these reducing substances, in such a manner that with appropriate fluxes a fluid slag is produced at a low temperature. The mass may be deprived of the superposed slag and put into reaction with a new oxidizing mixture to enrich the mass with the desired metals. For making non-oxidizing alloys the process may comprise the two stages of exothermic reduction of oxide containing material to produce a ferro-chrome high in chromium, and the incorporation of the ferrochrome with molten iron under a protective slag. This two-stage process forms the subject of Specification 402,430.
