Abstract
In a refining process for steel which may contain a high proportion of impurities, e.g. sulphur and phosphorus, and which has been subjected to an oxidizing treatment, the molten steel is mixed with a quantity of liquid aluminium in amount dependent on the oxygen content of the steel and sufficient to deoxidize and quieten the steel completely and immediately by aluminothermic reduction. The liquid steel may be poured into a bath of aluminium which may or may not contain fluxes, e.g. lime, soda, silica, or manganese oxide, which may be liquid or granular, in the latter case heated to 1,000-1,500 DEG C. The refined steel may then be poured into a liquid bath containing one or more alloying elements, Cr, Ni, Co, Mo, V, W, Al, Sb, Cu, U and Zr and/or C, Si, or Mn. The unrefined steel may be poured into a bath containing the alloying elements in liquid condition and having an overlying layer of liquid Al; if the latter is to be included as an alloying element it should be present in excess of that required for the refining operation. When Al is the only alloying element the steel is poured into a bath containing an excess of Al over that required for the refining operation. Specification 18962/09, [Class 72] is referred to.
