Abstract
In a process for refining iron, pig iron, or steel, such as basic steel, molten iron is poured simultaneously with a suitable slag superheated to a temperature above its melting point into a ladle without the application of heat, whereby the metal and the p slag is mixed intimately before settling in the ladle. The slag contains in addition to lime, silica or calcium fluoride and may also contain calcium carbide or reducing substances such as carbon in blocks or in suspension, and metals or alloys such as silicon, ferro-silicon, aluminium, aluminium-silicon, calcium silicide, manganese ferro-manganese or pig iron which may be employed for deoxidizing purposes or may constitute a permanent addition to the steel. These additions may be melted and poured into the ladle before the slag, and the metal, are poured in. Before melting the slag in an electric furnace, a small amount of iron &c. which may be part of the metal under treatment which serves as a conductor at the bottom of the furnace may be converted into deoxidizing alloys by the addition of reducing agents such as silica, aluminium, manganese or titanium and metals or alloys which eliminate nitrogen contained in the metal under treatment or serve as permanent additions such as chromium or nickel may be added to the steel &c. in the furnace.
