Abstract
Sintered hard alloys consist of a solid solution or mixed crystals of chromium carbide and titanium carbide containing 5-35 per cent, preferably 10-20 per cent, of chromium carbide to which has been added an auxiliary binder in amount from 10-60 per cent, preferably 40-50 per cent, of the whole composition, such auxiliary binder being chosen from one or more of the metals cobalt, nickel and iron. The alloy may be made by heating a mixture of titanium dioxide, chromic oxide and finely divided carbon, preferably in the form of lampblack, in a reducing atmosphere or vacuum, e.g., to a temperature of about 2000 DEG C., reducing the double carbide so produced to a fine powder, intimately mixing the powder with the binder metal, pressing the mixture to ingots which are presintered in reducing atmosphere or vacuum, machining the ingots to pieces of the desired shape and finally sintering in the said atmosphere, e.g. at 1250 DEG -1450 DEG C.
