Abstract
1321947 Tungsten carbide compositions REDERI AB NORDSTJERNAN 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25851/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Cemented tungsten carbide compositions with an improved combination of high bending strength with high hardness are produced from tungsten produced by a non plasma reduction process by reducing a preheated unreacted mixture of tungsten halide gas and a reducing gas consisting mainly of hydrogen at a temperature above the reaction temperature for said mixture and then immediately feeding said preheated mixture into a reaction chamber, carburizing the tungsten powder so produced and then sintering the carbide with a binder metal. In examples, tungsten hexachloride gas at 400‹ C. is mixed with hydrogen at 525‹ C. in a nickel tube leading to a reaction chamber at 1000‹ C. The tungsten powder produced is mixed with carbon and heated to 1650‹ C. in hydrogen or is carburized at 1450‹ in a carbon tube furnace. The tungsten carbide is ball milled with 2-30 wt. per cent cobalt and 2 wt. per cent wax, pressed, presintered at 950‹C. in hydrogen and then sintered in vacuum at 1300-1500‹ C. Alternative binder metals comprise Fe or Ni or an alloy of Co, Fe and/or Ni. Ti and Ta carbides may also be present.
