Abstract

1324050 Sintered carbide alloy CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 6 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 46492/71 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered carbide alloy comprises 30 to 70% by volume of the carbides of titanium, niobium, vanadium and/or tantalum and 25 to 70% by volume of a steel matrix comprising, in weight per cent: - 14 to 24% chromium 0À4 to 1À2% carbon up to 3% nickel up to 5% molybdenum the balance being iron. The alloy can be machined and then hardened so that the matrix is substantially martensitic, and is particularly useful in corrosion-resistant tool elements. Preparation The carbide powder and steel-forming ingredients are mixed together, ball-milled, pressed into compacts and sintered under vacuum at e.g. 1350‹C. The compact is then annealed at 345‹- 926‹C. and allowed to cool, the micro-structure than being substantially spheroidite. After machining, it is hardened by heating at 926-1093‹C. air or oil-quenched and tempered at 205-429‹C., the matrix being substantially martensitic.
