Abstract

1478511 Carbonitride alloys TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26158/74 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered carbonitride composition has a hard phase of the formula (Ti x My) (Cu Nv) z wherein:- M is Mo, W or both, u is 0À44-0À96, v is 0À04-0À56, x is 0À6-0À96, y is 0À04-0À4 and z is 0À8-1À07, falling within the area ABDE of Fig. 1, but not on the line BD, and 5-45 wt. per cent of a binder of metals of the iron group and group V1 refractory metals. The carbonitride has a two phase microstructure comprising a Ti- and N-rich carbonitride solid solution phase surrounded by another phase rich in Mo/W but poor in N. Up to 20 mole per cent of the Ti in the carbonitride may be replaced by Hf, Nb, V or Zr and up to 40 mole per cent of the Mo/W may be replaced by Cr, Nb, Ta or V. The binder alloy may contain 0À2-4% Al and/or 0À2-8% Ti. The compositions may be made by reacting metal and carbide mixtures with nitrogen at 1400-1800‹C, adding binder metal(s) milling, compacting and sintering. Alternatively carbide and nitride powders may be mixed and homogenized by heat, further carbide added, then binder material followed by milling, compacting and sintering as above. The compositions may be used in making tools.
