Abstract

PURPOSE: To cheaply manufacture a sintered hard alloy with superior mechanical toughness and superior heat check resistance by compacting WC crystals and B1- type crystals not contg. Ta and Nb but contg. N together with an Fe group metal as a binder followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: WC as a hard material and B1-type crystals not contg. expensive Ta and Nb but contg. N in an N to (C+N) molar ratio of 0.1W0.5 are mixed with an Fe group metal such as Co or Ni as a binder for the hard material in the form of powder. This mixture is compacted and sintered in ≤10-2W10-4 Torr vacuum and 0.1W500 Torr an N partial pressure. By adjusting the molar ratio of N/(C+N) to the above-mentioned value, the B1-type crystals are refined, and a sintered hard alloy with superior mechanical toughness and superior heat check resistance can be manufactured cheaply.
