Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high hardness sintered body for a tool with enhanced toughness by adding a specified amount of Al, Cu, Fe, etc. to cubic structure type boron nitride of a prescribed grain size.
CONSTITUTION: This sintered body contains 30W80vol% cubic type boron nitride of ≤10μ average grain size, and the remaining binding phase consists of one or more kinds of compounds or the mutual solid soln. compound selected from the carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of the IVa, Va and VIa group transition metals such as Ti, Zr and Hf in the periodic table and an Al compound. The Al content in the binder is about 5W30wt%, most of the binding particles of the binder are ≤1μ, and the binder further contains Cu and an Fe group metal by ≤about 20wt%. When the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of a IVa, Va or VIa group metal in the periodic table are represented by MCx, MNx and M(C,N)x, respectively, (x) is ≤0.95, and they form intermetallic compounds with Al. Cubic type boron nitride and the binder are sintered at about 900°C under≥about 20kb pressure to obtain a high hardness sintered body capable of being joined to hard metal.
