Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-hardness high-toughness sintered body for cutting by selecting a specified nitride-metal or carbonitride-metal binder as the binder of boron nitride crystals.
CONSTITUTION: This sintered body contains 40W95vol% cubic system and/or wurtzite type boron nitride crystals, and the balance is occupied by a binder contg. a nitride or carbonitride component in an amount equal to or larger than the amount of a metal component contained. As the nitride or carbonitride component TiN or TiCN is used singly. One or more among the carbides, nitrides and borides of the IV, V and VI group metals and Al2O3 may be added to TiN or TiCN. As the metal component one or more kinds of metals are selected from the 1st group consisting of Zr, Ti, Nb and Mo, the 2nd group consisting of Ni and Co and the 3rd group consisting of Al and Si. Mixed powder of the crystals and binder is compacted and sintered at a high temp. under a super high pressure to obtain the desired boron nitride sintered body.
