Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a tough dense composite sintered body tool by unifying Al-or Al alloy-added cubic system boron nitride and sintered carbonitride or sintered nitride with hard ceramics powder as a binder followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: 5wt% of Al powder is added to mixed powder consisting of 70vol% of cubic system boron nitride powder with an average primary particle diameter of 3W6μ, 28vol% of Si3N4 powder of 325 mesh or below and 2vol% of Al2O3 powder, and they are mixed with a ball mill for 40hr. A disk made of sintered carbonitride is placed in a Mo reactor, and the mixed powder is filled on the disk. The reactor is then held at 1450°C and 50 kilobars with an ultrahigh press. high temp. generator to obtain a composite sintered body consisting of hard sintered layers contg. cubic system boron nitride and carbonitride layers firmly bound. A tool useful as a cutting tool for iron type slightly machinable materials can be manufactured.
