Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a sintered hard alloy excellent in hardness, flexure strength and useful life in cutting, relatively inexpensive and suitable for cutting tools by a method wherein NbC, Mo2C and TiN are mixed with WC and TiC and the mixture is sintered together with an iron group metal.
CONSTITUTION: Raw materials consiting of 10W50wt% of NbC, 10W30 wt% of TiC, 10W30wt% of WC, 5W20wt% of Mo2C, 5W10wt% of TiN and 5W20 wt% of an iron group metal are mixed with each other in a wet type process by adding a solvent such as acetone, and then the solvent is removed by evaporation. After adding paraffin wax to the mixed materials, a powder of suitable particle size are prepared by passing the mixed materials through a sieve of about 40 mesh. The powder is compacted under a pressure of about 1,000kg/cm2, the resultant compact is calcined at about 300°C and is sintered in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at about 1,400°C to obtain a sintered body. The sintered hard alloy thus obtained is relatively inexpensive because of the low W content, is high in hardness, toughness and abrasion resistance, is particularly excellent in flexure strength and useful life in cutting, and is suitable for cutting tools.
