Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title dense sintered body of high toughness by adding Al to mixed powder of cubic system BN powder with a specified primary particle diameter, silicon carbide and/or sillicon nitride and one or more out of MgO, Al2O3 and Y2O3 followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: 1W15wt% of Al is added to mixed powder consisting of 50W 95wt% of cubic system BN with an average primary particle diameter of 20μ or below and the balance silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride and one or more out of MgO, Al2O3 and Y2O3. The Al-added mixed powder is then sintered with metal oxide and Al as a binder under an ultra high press. to give a very fine sintered body. 15wt% or less of a VIII group transition metal may further be added besides Al. The sintering process is carried out at 1300W1500°C under 45W55 kilobars, and the reaction time is 3min or less. The resulting sintered body is easily worked with diamond and is suitable for use as a cutting tool.
