Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cubic system BN sintered body for a cutting material with superior wear, heat and chipping resistances by mixing superhard cubic system BN powder with powders of carbide, nitride and oxide of a specified metal and Al powder followed by press-molding and sintering.
CONSTITUTION: Powdered starting material is prepared by mixing 10W80wt% cubic system BN powder of ≤20μ average primary particle size with 90W20wt% powder consisting of 89W5wt% one kind of simple substance powder, two or more kinds of mixed powder or mutual compound powder selected from powders of carbides such as TiC, HfC and ZrC and nitrides such as TiN, HfN and ZrN and one kind of simple substance powder or two or more kinds of mixed powder selected from powders of Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO and Y2O3 and of 1W15wt% Al powder. The starting material is then sintered at 1,300W1,500°C under 40W60kbar.
