Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a sintered hard alloy with superior thermal fatigue properties and impact toughness by adding a specified amt. of TiN to a hard sintered alloy based on WC and TiC to form a B1 solid soln. contg. compound carbonitride.
CONSTITUTION: In manufacture of a hard sintered alloy by sintering WC powder and TiC powder with Co as a binder, TiN is added in a TiN to TiC ratio of 0.10W 0.60. At this time, the ratio of (TiC+TiN)/(TiC+WC+TiN) is adjusted to 0.15W 0.40, and Co is used in an amt. of 7W20vol%. TiN induces a dissolution reaction with WC and TiC in sintering, and they are unified as B1 type solid soln. (TiW)(CN) of 1μ or less average grain size. The resulting hard sintered alloy with N-contg. B1 type solid soln. allowed to appear in its structure exhibits superior strength to chipping in a cutting use which accompanies thermal fatigue and impact fatigue.
