Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a high density phase boron nitride-contg. sintered cutting tool with superior cutting performance by adding high density phase boron nitride to cermet forming starting materials followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: Ceramic substance consisting of nitrides, oxides, borides and carbides of various metals 40W95vol%, metal powder of Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, W, V or the like 0.5W25vol% and wurtzite type BN powder 1W40vol% are mixed with a ball mill made of sintered hard alloy. At this time, the total amount of the metal and the BN is adjusted to 5vol% or more. The mixture is then filled in Mo capsule 8, where it is sintered under a pressure of 3W7 GPa at a temp. of 1,000W2,300°C by being pressurized and electrified with upper and lower anvils 1 of a high pressure high temp. apparatus. The wurtzite type BN undergoes no change, or 90% or less of it is converted into cubic system BN, and the metal and the wurtzite type BN or the metal, the wurtzite type BN and the cubic system BN form a network structure and surround the ceramic substance to give a high density phase BN-contg. sintered cutting tool with superior cutting performance.
