Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a consolidated body of cubic boron nitride useful as a hard tool material by mixing each powder of cubic boron nitride, titanium nitride, titanium carbide and mixed metals of Al and Co at specific ratios and sintering the mixture under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: 60W40% Cubic boron nitride powder, by weight, 22W32% titanium nitride powder, 11W14% titanium carbide powder and 7W14% mixed metallic powders of Al powder and Co powder are mixed and the mixture is packed in a vessel. This is loaded in a high temp. and high pressure generating chamber, where it is first applied with 35000W43000kg/cm2 pressures, after which it is heated to 1100W1400°C, and is held at these temp. for several minutesWseveral tens minutes. Thence, the pressure is increased to 43000W55000kg/cm2, after which it is heated to 1400W1700°C, and is maintained at these temps. for several minutesWseveral tens minutes. Next, while the pressure is held, only the heating is stopped, and the chamber temp. is reduced down to 300°C, after which the pressure is returned to atmospheric pressure, thence the sintered body is removed from the interior of the chamber. The tip consisting of such consolidated body exhibits exceptionally high productivity.
