Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the impact and thermal impact resistances by adding a carbide composition of TaC:NbC, TiC and a metallic composition contg. Nb, Ta, Zr, etc. as a binder to a prescribed amount of cubic system BN and/or wurtzite system BN crystals.
CONSTITUTION: The titled sintered body consists of 40W90vol% cubic system BN and/or wurtzite system BN crystals and the balance carbide composition-metallic composition binder. The carbide composition is a solid soln. having the vol. ratio of TaC and/or NbC to TiC in the range of 5:1W3:2. The metallic composition is composed of one or more among Nb, Ta, Zr, Mo and Ti (the 1st group), Ni and/or Co (the 2nd group), and Al and/or Si (the 3rd group).
