Abstract

1332061 Sintered carbide alloy CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 6 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 46490/71 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered carbide alloy comprises 30 to 75 per cent by volume of the carbides of titanium, niobium, vanadium and/or tantalum and 25 to 70 per cent by volume of a steel matrix comprising, in weight per cent:- and the balance at least 50% iron, wherein the sum of the nickel content plus half the chromium content does not exceed 15%, and the matrix in the solution-treated condition is substantially in a soft martensitic form. The alloy can then be age-hardened for use in tools and machine parts. Preparation The carbide powder and powdered steelforming ingredients are mixed together with enough of a strong carbide former to combine with any free carbon, e.g. titanium or zirconium hydride which provide active metallic titanium or zirconium. The mixture is ball-milled, pressed into compacts and sintered under vacuum at e.g. 1425‹C. The compact is annealed at 760-1165‹C. and air-cooling to ambient temperature affects a transformation to soft martensite. The alloy is then agehardened at 260-650‹C.
