Abstract

A heat treatable ferrous alloy is formed by pressing and liquid phase sintering a powdered mixture of a primary solid solution of titanium carbide at least 70% saturated with a carbide of tungsten, molybdenum or chromium, and matrix forming ingredients which comprise mainly iron and sufficient tungsten, molybdenum or chromium with carbon to saturate said primary solid solution and form a secondary carbide in the steel matrix. Preferably the composition contains 22%-90% of the primary carbide solid solution and the matrix may consist of low, medium or high alloy steels containing alloying elements such as cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium. The powder mixture is prepared either from a saturated solid solution of the primary carbides of 3 micron size and the steel matrix ingredients of 20 micron size, or with an unsaturated primary carbide the extra carbides required for saturation being added with the matrix ingredients. Sintering is effected under vacuum at 1300 DEG C. to 1575 DEG C. and the sintered alloy is annealed between 650 DEG C. to 975 DEG C. for 1/2 hour to 4 hours, cooled at 10 DEG C/hour to below 600 DEG C. and then furnace cooled. Hardening is carried out by quenching from 870 DEG C. to 1315 DEG C. Specification 778,268 is referred to.
