Abstract
A process for preparing sintered alloys of carbides of tungsten and/or molybdenum consists in preparing pulverulent nitride of tungsten and/or molybdenum, carburising the nitride with release of nitrogen, adding a powdered metal or alloy to serve as a binder, and sintering. The nitride may be prepared by treating pulverized oxide of tungsten and/or molybdenum at a temperature between 450 DEG and 800 DEG C with a current of anhydrous ammonia. The carburisation may be effected by treating the nitride, mixed with the requisite quantity of finely-divided pure carbon, at 1200 DEG -1500 DEG C in a current of dry hydrogen or other reducing atmosphere, in a neutral atmosphere, or in vacuo. The binding metal or alloy, e.g., cobalt or cobalt-iron, may be added in the metallic form, or in the form of oxide which is reduced during the treatment with ammonia.
