Abstract

A hard metal alloy, particularly for tools, is produced by sintering a mixture of 78-80 per cent tungsten carbide (WC), 2-4 per cent tantalum carbide (TaC), 3-5 per cent titanium carbide (TiC), 12-15 per cent cobalt and 0-3 per cent of one or more carbides of metals of Groups 4a, 5a and 6a (excluding tungsten, tantalum and titanium) and/or one or more nitrates, borides or silicides of metals of Groups 4a, 5a and 6a under such decarbonizing conditions that total percentage of carbon is reduced to 0.2-0.5 per cent less than stoichiometric amount and the per centage of free carbon is less than 0.1 per cent. The decarbonizing conditions may be obtained by packing the mixture in powdered aluminium or zirconium oxide and graphite or by sintering in vacuum. In an example, 79 per cent tungsten carbide, 3 per cent tantalum carbide, 4 per cent titanium carbide and 14 per cent Co were mixed after first heating the carbides together at 1700 DEG C. The resultant mixture was then packed in a powder of 85 per cent aluminium oxide and 15 per cent graphite and sintered at 1400 DEG C. The total carbon content of the resultant compact was 5.5-5.65 per cent and the free carbon content was 0.05 per cent.
