Abstract
1419278 Sintered cemented carbides UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 13250/73 Heading C7D Sintered cemented tungsten carbide is made by ball milling a powder mixture of W, sufficient graphite to form WC 3-20 wt per cent Co for a time no longer than that needed to produce a cold pressed green compact of maximum density. The ball milled mixture is then cold pressed and sintered e.g. at 1350-1550‹C. The W powder is preferably 2-2¢ micron, the Co powder 1-1¢ micron and the graphite - 200 mesh. Up to 10 wt per cent of one of TaC, TiC, Cr 3 C 2 , VC and NbC or up to 20% total of more than one may be added to the mixture before ball milling. The amount of graphite included in the mixture is Œ 0.1% of the stoichiometric amount for forming WC with the W. The required milling time varies 58-128 hours and the compacts are sintered in a packing of 25% graphite and 75% Al 2 O 3 .
