[Also in Division C7] An insert for machining of steel or the like comprises (A) an insert of sintered cemented carbide consisting of one or more of WC, TiC, TaC or NbC bound with Fe and/or Co and/or Ni, and (B) a surface layer 2-6 Á thick of TiC or TiC in solid solution with WC and/or TaC and/or NbC, which layer has a higher wear resistance than body (A) and has been applied thereto by deposition from a gaseous phase reaction mixture at a pressure below atmospheric. The insert may be a plate having at least one cutting edge and at least one chip face covered by a layer (B), or a plate having at least one cutting edge, chip face and clearance face, with the or each chip face covered by (B) but not the cutting edge(s), and in this type of insert the clearance face(s) may also be covered.
