Abstract

1349385 Diamond tool GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 26135/71 Heading B5E [Also in Division C4] A diamond-tipped tool insert for the direct machining of metals includes (a) a diamond crystalline material having a concentration of diamond which is at least 70% by volume in which substantially all the diamond crystals are bonded to adjacent diamond crystals, (b) a support body comprising a mass of carbide powder or cemented carbide in amount in excess of the diamond material, and (c) an interface between the diamond crystal material and the carbide comprising the diamond and carbide, the bond therebetween being stronger than the tensile strength of the diamond. The carbide support body may be formed from tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide or mixtures of these and from cobalt, nickel and iron.
