1291388 Coating with metal carbides SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS A B 17 Feb 1970 [21 Feb 1969] 7615/70 Heading C7F An insert for machining steel comprises a body of the carbide of W, Ti or Ta or mixtures thereof bound with Ni, Co, Fe or Cr or mixtures thereof having a surface layer of TiC with or without the carbides of Ta, W or Nb, the carbon content of the surface layer being less than stoichiometric. The layer may also contain 0À5 to 5% of oxygen and/or nitrogen. The layer may be applied from a gas containing (per cent by vol.) 96H 2 , 3À5 TiCl 4 , and 0À5C 3 H 8 at 875‹ C.
