Abstract

1377098 Surface-hardening metals A BOPP 12 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 52586/71 Addition to 1363764 Headings C7F and C7U Steel or cemented carbides are surface-hardened essentially in the absence of oxygen, at a temperature of at least 400‹C, by contact with a mixture containing 5-85 weight parts B 4 C, 1-73 parts anhydrous Al 2 O 3 , 1 ppm to 6 parts NaBF 4 and 1 ppm to 10 parts NaF, NH 3 gas being introduced during treatment. CO and CO 2 may be added to the treatment atmosphere.
