Abstract
1507954 Carburizing IPSEN INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL GmbH 2 March 1976 [11 March 1975] 08234/76 Headings C7D and C7U The carburization of ferrous articles by gaseous reagents is carried out by heating the workpiece in an atmosphere of cracked ammonia, fed to the furnace immediately after decomposition, as methane-free hydrocarbon and methane, resulting in part from the dissociation of the methane-free hydrocarbon and in part from the reaction of the cracked ammonia and carbon content of the steel article. The proportion of methane present, and hence the control of the carburization, is controlled by varying either or both the amount of cracked ammonia or the methane-free hydrocarbon fed into the furnace atmosphere. The use of cracked ammonia also permits the surface nitriding of the article.
