Abstract

Objects made of high-alloy iron or steel are hardened by nitriding by supporting the object in a metallic pressure vessel, the object forming one electrode and the vessel another electrode, an additional electrode containing iron being arranged in the vicinity of the object, the additional electrode containing a larger amount of pure iron than the object. A gas containing nitrogen is introduced into the vessel and the object and additional electrode are connected to one side of a power supply while the vessel is connected to the other side of the power supply to create a glow discharge and hydrogen is added to the nitrogen-containing gas during a limited starting period only. During the nitriding treatment iron particles are sputtered away from the surface of the additional electrode into the gas atmosphere and are deposited on the surface of the object. The additional electrode may be a steel alloy including one or more of chromium, molybdenum and vanadium, the alloying elements also being sputtered on to the surface of the object.
