Abstract
1329216 Refining steel VACMETAL GES FUR VAKUUM-METALLURGIE mbH 15 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 12126/72 Heading C7D In a process for removing C from highlyalloyed steel, e.g. chrome steel, previously refined steel is treated with O 2 in a vacuum vessel and the temperature of the gases extracted from the vessel is monitored to detect an abrupt drop, whereupon the O 2 treatment is stopped and the temperature of the melt is measured. By means of a graph such as that shown, the C content is determined and the composition of the melt can be corrected, either by a further O 2 treatment or by adding alloying substances e.g. Fe-Mn (1%C), Fe-Cr (1À5%C), Fe-Si.
