Abstract

1,129,966. Gas carburising or nitriding. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. April 1,1966 [May 5, 1965], No.18905/65. Heading C7U. A metal workpiece is cleaned and heated by making it the cathode for a glow discharge in a chamber containing a reducing gas at low pressure, after which the reducing gas is partially replaced by a treating gas the ions of which are heavier than those of the reducing gas. The glow discharge is maintained by rectified alternating current until the reducing gas has been partially replaced by the treatment gas, after which it is maintained by direct current such that the mean kinetic energy imparted to the ions by the alternating current at the instant when the treatment gas is introduced exceeds the energy imported by the direct current. The reducing gas may be hydrogen and the treatment gas nitrogen or a carburising gas.
