Abstract

PURPOSE:To carry out stable nitriding or carburizing treatment over a long period of time, in applying treatment such as ion nitriding, ion carburizing or the like to an object to be treated by glow discharge, by adjusting the object to be treated to earth potential and, if necessary, heating the same. CONSTITUTION:Objects 4a-4d to be treated are placed on plural steps of shelves 3a-3d provided to an electroconductive cylinder 2 in a steel vacuum container 1. An interior of the container 1 is evacuated to 0.2-20 torr by a vacuum pump 9 and a nitriding or carburizing atmospheric gas is introduced from a bomb 11. Subsequently, from a D.C. high voltage power source 7, voltage of several hundreds- several thousands volt is applied between an anode 5 and the container held at earth potential, that is, the objects 4a-4d to be treated and the atmospheric gas is ionized by glow discharge to subject said objects to be treated to ion nitriding or ion carburizing treatment. In this time, the temp. of the objects to be treated detected by a thermocouple 14 is applied to a control circuit 16 to control voltage of the power source 7 and a heater power source 13. Stable treatment can be carried out at high heat efficiency.
