Abstract

The workpiece is open at both ends, and is suspended in a vacuum furnace. A uniform electric field is created in the bore of the workpiece; and the gas to be ionised is fed into the furnace and removed from the interior of the workpiece, esp. from one end of the latter. One pref. plant includes an anode bar suspended along the axis of the workpiece which forms a cathode. The resulting plasma causes diffusion of H2 and/or C into the bore of the workpiece when the gas is e.g. N2 and/or CH4 at 0.02-5 mbars. Uniform hardening of the bores is achieved.
