Abstract

1,170,057. Annealing steel sheet; coating with metals. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov.29, 1967 [Dec.1, 1966], No. 53875/66. Headings C7F and C7N. Steel sheet or strip which is to be surface treated by hot dip coating is passed firstly through a direct-fired furnace in which the fuel-air ratio is controlled to produce an atmosphere such that there is formed on the steel an oxide layer not greater than 10<SP>-5</SP> inches thick in addition to any surface layer that may previously have been present; the steel is then passed through a second furnace having a mildly reducing atmosphere wherein the oxide layer is reduced. The atmosphere in the first furnace may contain oxygen in an amount corresponding to not more than 10<SP>-9</SP> atmosphere pressure in contact with the steel, while the furnace may operate at 1100‹ -1500‹C. to give a steel exit temperature in the range 400‹ - 950‹C. The second furnace may be heated electrically or by radiant tubes and the atmosphere therein may consist of nitrogen or inert gas containing not more than 15% of hydrogen. The steel may subsequently pass through a cooling zone and one or more holding or heat-treatment furnaces before entering a galvanizing tank.
