Abstract

1,260,659. Heat-treating mild steel; galvanizing mild steel. SOC. ANON. METALLURGIQUE D'ESPERANCE LONGDOZ. Dec.10, 1968 [Dec.14, 1967], No. 58734/68. Headings C7A, C7F and C7N. Mild steel having a carbon content below 0À004% and nitrogen below 0À007%, which values may be obtained by treatment either in the molten or solid state, is annealed at above 550‹C. and quenched to produce a cold-workable non-ageing steel. In a modification the nitrogen is adjusted to 0À007 to 0À0015% so that the product will age only after working. Formability of the steel may be improved by additions of copper with phosphorus or antimony, or by phosphorus or antimony alone, while the heat-treated steel may be subsequently hot dip galvanized e.g. by immersion at 455‹C. for 5 to 45 seconds followed by rapid cooling, without adverse effect on its properties. The process may be applied to continuously cast steel which has been deoxidized by a combination of silicon and aluminium. A suitable furnace Fig. 1 contains a heating chamber 1 containing resistances 10, sheet 5 passing from the heating chamber through slot 4 to a cooling chamber 3 where it passes over a series of cooled rolls 11. The furnace is filled with a protective atmosphere, while the sheet enters and leaves through baffle chambers 6, 7. On leaving the cooling zone the sheet may pass directly to a galvanizing furnace Fig. 2, where it is first heated by resistances 16 before passing through bath 17, coating thickness control device 21, and water sprays 21, 22 being finally cooled by rolls 23 internally cooled by water circulation. A protective atmosphere is supplied through pipe 18.
