Abstract

Device for controlling the cooling intensity in the cooling zone (a) of continuous annealing furnaces used for heat treatment, esp. for treating cast iron pipes. Zone (a) has a water colled roof; and below the roof is a row of transverse baffles mounted on pivot shafts. By rotating the pivot shafts, the angle of the flat baffles can be varied to increase or decrease the rate of heat transfer from the workpieces to the roof. The baffles are pref. located directly under the roof and, when horizontal, form a damper. The water cooled roof pref. consists of a flat sheet metal box located on pillars; and this roof may cover part or all of the cooling zone (a). The pivot shafts can be rotated independently or together. Used for the heat treatment of cast iron pipes where, e.g. the pipes are cooled to below 720 degrees C., i.e. below the lower metallurgical transformation point, before leaving the furnace.
