Abstract

1,231,478. Coating by hot dipping. PRODUCTION MACHINERY CORP. Nov. 5, 1968, No.52312/68. Heading C7F. Apparatus and method of hot dip coating metal strip e.g. ferrous, with metal e. g. Zn, Sn, Al or terne comprises passing the strip through a molten metal bath below the strip annealing temperature, annealing the strip electrically, quenching the strip in another molten metal bath below strip annealing temperature and passing it through a reducing atmosphere prior to passing through a molten coating metal bath. Strip may be electrically annealed in oxidizing or reducing atmosphere e.g. O 2 , steam, H 2 , NH 3 , HCl or H 2 SO 4 and the pre-heating and quenching baths are preferably molten Pb-Bi alloy although Na, K or Hg may be used. Strip temperature leaving quenching bath and entering coating bath may be 300‹ -1000‹ F. e.g. 620-680‹ F. for tinning, 850-920‹ F. for galvanizing and 1200-1280‹ F. for aluminizing in which case extra heating of strip is necessary. Steel strip B is passes through molten metal preheat bath 20 into annealing chamber 60 where the strip with metal baths 20 and 40 forms the secondary path of transformer primary 68 and is heated to annealing temperature. The annealed strip passes into quench melt 40 fed with melt from 20 via conduits 50, 52 and pump 50. Quenched strip is passed through reducing atmosphere in chamber 70 and directly into coating metal bath 90.
