Abstract

1,151,979. Coating by hot-dipping. ARMCO STEEL CORP. April 18, 1968, No. 18416/68. Heading C7F. A steel strip 11 is coated on one side only by hot-dipping with e.g. Al, Pb or Zn by supplying oxidizing gas to one side of the strip to form an oxide coating to which the molten metal does not adhere. As shown, the strip is fed through a series of compartments 12 to 16 where it is subjected to the following treatments: - alkali, rinse, acid, rinse, drier from which it passes through a furnace 18 having burners 19. The gas feed to the burners is such that a reducing atmosphere is produced in the furnace. Air or oxygen is fed into the furnace at 46 to form the oxide layer. A protective gas is fed into the transfer chamber 34 at 52. The coated strip after leaving the bath 39 is cooled at 41 and any metal which does adhere to the oxide is removed by a brush 47.
