Abstract

1,244,933. Continuous hot dipping strands. ARMCO STEEL CORP. Jan. 21, 1969 [Feb. 27, 1968], No. 3332/69. Heading C7F. A method and apparatus for the continuous hot dip coating of strands such as wire and tube with e. g. Al, Zn and terne in which the coating metal is allowed to oxidize on the strand as it leaves the bath and a jet of fluid such as air, steam, N 2 or A is then tangentially directed at the coating to break up the oxide and control the coating weight. As shown in Fig. 1 the strand 10 is cleaned and conveyed via a protective atmosphere chamber 12 to coating bath 14 where an excess of coating metal is applied using an exit die 16. Alternatively excess metal may be applied by pouring metal over the strand or passing it through a trough of molten metal. A jet nozzle 20 is located at a sufficient distance from the bath to allow an oxide film to form on the coating. A gas is introduced into the nozzle via 44 and is tangentially directed on to the coating to remove excess metal which is collected in trough 46 and recirculated to the coating bath 14. The strand passes through a central bore of the nozzle holder and a series of jets are directed on to the strand counter to the strand movement from a series of slots arranged in the nozzle body.
