Abstract

796,242. Coating metals by tinning. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. May 9, 1956, No. 14462/56. Class 82(2) Strand-like metal articles are coated with molten metal by a process in which, after cleaning, the strand is moved upwardly past a lip at one side of which the strand contacts the molten metal and carries a coating thereof between itself and the lip, the thickness being at least partly controlled by maintaining the hydrostatic pressure of the molten metal at said one side of the lip under negative pressure. The lip contacts the strand above the level of molten metal in the bath whereby the negative pressure is maintained by capillary action. After cleaning, the strand may pass through a cooling hood. Fig. 2 shows a strip 1 passing out of a cooling hood 2 into a bath 3 and past lips 6 and 7. In modifications, the strand enters the bath at the bottom. The lips are adjustable vertically, horizontally and angularly. The tips of the lips may be made of molybdenum. As shown in Fig. 5, the strip 1 passes from the cooling hood 2 through a slot or nozzle 40 in exit piece 41 the lower end of which is in molten sealing metal in a basin 42. An inner cover 43 restricts the escape of reducing gas from hood 2. A scraper 44 removes scale &c. from roll 37 Pipes 46 opening into the hood 2 feed vaporized sodium, carried by the reducing gas (e.g. hydrogen or dissociated ammonia) used in the hood. Containers 47, 48 hold molten coating metal and have electric heaters 49 and mouths 47a, 48a through which the molten metal is fed to the strand. The strand remains surrounded by reducing gas between its exit from the slot 40 until it is coated and, for this, further reducing gas, beyond that issuing from the nozzle, may be applied to the strand between the nozzle end and the bath entry. Adjustable pipes 50 direct finishing gas at the contact point of the strand and containers, this gas and that issuing from nozzle 40 preferably burning. Scoops 51 direct cool air on to the coated strand. Other cooling means such as compressed air, steam sprays, water sprays and water cooled rolls may also be used. The containers 47, 48 may be made of ceramics or of molybdenum and its alloys. The containers have lips at their coating portions Fig. 6 shows a form in which the lower lip 52 is an extension of the container and the lip proper 54 above the molten metal level has an extension 55 down into the metal. In Fig. 7 the lip 54 is wholly above the level of molten metal and co-operates with the oxide film 58. The lips 52, 54 may be made of cast iron or molybdenum. The strip may be coated on one or both sides. and reference is made to the coating of iron or steel strip with zinc, tin, terne, aluminium and aluminium alloys.
