The surfaces of iron or steel articles are nitrided in an atmosphere containing a gaseous mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen in the range of ratios of 20:80 to 2:98 parts by volume and at a temperature in the range 480‹ - 570‹ C. under the action of an electrical glow discharge and under a pressure below atmospheric.
