Abstract

1,168,499. Sintered silicon nitride. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Aug. 6, 1968 [Sept. 8, 1967j, No. 41053/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] Silicon nitride articles are produced by first sintering a compact of silicon powder in a protective atmosphere substantially free from nitrogen, and then subsequently nitriding it. The said protective atmosphere may contain argon, hydrogen, or helium and the first sintering may be carried out at temperatures between 800‹ and 1400‹ C ., whilst the nitriding treatment is carried out for about 16 hours at 1350‹C. and 20 hours at 1450‹ C.
