Abstract

A room-temperature-stable alpha-beta titanium alloy is prepared by pressing and sintering a powdered mixture of (by weight) at least 80% Ti, not more than 10% Al and not more than 10% Mn, the ratio of Al to Mn being such that the alpha-beta to beta transformation temperature of the alloy is higher than 885 DEG C. The titanium may be introduced into the mixture as titanium hydride, the hydrogen being removed during sintering. The mixture is pressed, either in a die or hydrostatically, at 35-50 t.s.i. and the pressed compact is sintered, either in vacuum or an inert atmosphere, at 1200-1300 DEG C. The compact is raised slowly to sintering temperature, being maintained at 300-800 DEG C for a sufficient time for the removal of hydrogen.
