Abstract
Compact sintered masses of uranium dioxide having a bulk density of about 10 gm. per c.c. are prepared by cold pressing a non-stoichio-metric uranium dioxide containing an excess of oxygen and preferably of composition UO2.09 to UO2.15 and sintering the mass in an inert atmosphere at 1200-1500 DEG C. or higher for at least a half an hour. Uranium oxide of defective structure may be prepared by heating uranium dioxide (UO2.0) in air at 300 DEG C. for a time sufficient to give the desired increase in weight or alternatively it may be prepared by the reduction of U3O8 by hydrogen at temperatures about 650 DEG C. According to an example a non-stoichiometric uranium dioxide prepared by reducing U3O8 by hydrogen at 650 DEG C. and having a composition UO2.13 was compacted by cold pressing at 20,000 p.s.i. and the compacts were sintered at 1400 DEG C. in argon for 30 minutes; the bulk density was 10 gm. per c.c. The sintered compact masses may be enclosed in sealed envelopes of aluminium, magnesium, beryllium or zirconium and used as nuclear fuel elements in nuclear reactors. Specification 779,134, [Group XL (a)], is referred to.
