Abstract

Articles made from an alloy containing at least at the surface thereof, less than 85% of iron are nitrided by subjecting them to glow discharge in a nitrogenous atmosphere. The atmosphere may be ammonia in which 50% of the ammonia may be replaced by either hydrogen or nitrogen. Before the nitriding treatment, which may be carried out at a temperature above 500 DEG C., the articles may be cleaned by treatment in a glow discharge in an atmosphere of hydrogen.
