Abstract

A process of treating ferro silicon containing 2-5 per cent silicon comprises, prior to cold rolling, heating the alloy to above 400 DEG C. in a gas stream containing a nitrogen compound whereby nitrogen is dissolved in the alloy to between 0.01 per cent and 0.14 per cent without the formation of austenite or nitride, and, after cold rolling to the final thickness, the nitrogen is removed by annealing in a hydrogen containing atmosphere free from nitrogen and any substances having an oxidizing effect on the alloy. The gas stream may be a mixture of hydrogen and ammonia and may also contain ammonium chloride. The heating in the gas stream may be at a temperature between 500 DEG C. and 600 DEG C. and the final anneal to remove the nitrogen may be in two stages, between 500 DEG C. and 800 DEG C. and between 900 DEG C. and 1000 DEG C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen.
